this cartoon shows that chinese people are losing the ability to write by hand with a rapidly decreasing reliance on handwritten characters in an increasingly computerized world. we notice that four people in the picture are faced with similar writing difficulties, some of whom have not written for a long time or relied on computer printing.
how does this decline in writing ability occur? i think the most important reason is the reduction of writing demand with widespread of computerized forms of writing. this method appeals to the recognition of correct characters, but it does not require direct recall of specific strokes and radicals from memory. in this way, when time comes to put a pen to paper, many chinese simply draw a blank. however, chinese’s intrinsic merits as a language are well-known: it is the oldest writing system in the world. therefore, we should try our best to improve the writing level of chinese characters, which will bring a host of benefits, such as building willpower, improving intelligence, and strengthening personal character.
all in all, it is inevitable that, as we grow up along with technology, we become increasingly dependent upon it. but we should remember that speed and efficiency from the technology are always important, unique cultural significance a
nd values in handwriting of chinese are more important.
